This is the first timetable which I am tackling in my effort to document all of the various Union Pacific tour routes in the summer of 1957. This train was used by the "BC" (Bargain California) economy class tour between Chicago and Riverside, California, where the tour group detrained for the Mission Inn; also by the "ZLV" (Zion-Las Vegas) tour between Chicago and Las Vegas, where the 2:30 a.m. arrival was matched by an equally red-eye 6:45 a.m. departure the next morning for Cedar City and motor tours of Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon (North Rim) National Parks. Of course, Las Vegas never closes....
I had wanted to include a timetable for the other major tours: The "YT" tour of Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Parks; the "YRG" tour which covered much of the same ground but finished with a journey through Colorado's Royal Gorge on the D. & R. G. W. and stopovers in Colorado Springs (Pike's Peak) and Denver; the "Z" tour of Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon; the "YTZ" tour which combined the major features of the "YT" and "Z" tours, and the "C" deluxe California tour. These all show to have left Chicago at 2:15 p.m. of Saturday afternoons between June 15 and September 24 [1957]. However, neither the Official Guide nor the Union Pacific public timetables show a train departing Chicago at or anywhere near 2:15 p.m. It must have been a special train operated specifically for the tour groups; the various tour descriptions confirm that it was equipped with a lounge car and a dining car although nothing is said about any dome cars. While I can't provide a detailed schedule, I can glean these various timepoints from the tour brochure listings: Depart Chicago at 2:15 p.m. Saturday; arrive Omaha at 11:15 p.m. and depart at 11:45 p.m. The "YT" and "YRG" tour groups would depart Ogden at 8:55 p.m. Sunday, five minutes after the scheduled Yellowstone Special, and would arrive consolidated with it (probably as a second section) at 7:30 a.m. Monday while the "YTZ" tour group would follow suit as far as Ashton, Idaho, where it would be split off onto train No. 47 arriving Victor, Idaho at 7:15 a.m. Monday for transfer onto motor bus tours. The "Z" and "C" tours, still operating as a special, would depart Ogden at 8:50 p.m. and arrive Salt Lake City at 9:45 p.m.; there the "Z" tour passengers would have a little over an hour to explore the famous Salt Lake City Sunday night life (mild sarcasm only!) before departing as part of the Utah Parks Special at 11:00 p.m. headed for Cedar City early Monday morning at 6:30. The "C" tour would depart Salt Lake at 10:30 p.m., five minutes behind the Domeliner City of St. Louis, and would arrive in Las Vegas on Monday morning at the semi-civilized hour of 7:05 a.m., 45 minutes behind the preceding streamliner. From these points the various tour groups would use chartered buses and regularly scheduled trains to continue their itineraries; I can only speculate as to how the various sleepers, coaches and other equipment were returned to Chicago for the next weeks' tours.
