The Santa Fe had introduced its "Pleasure Dome" lounge with the private "Turquoise Room" on its flagship Super Chief in 1951. Not to be outdone, the Union Pacific placed its own order for new dome equipment, and the Streamliner City of Los Angeles became the Domeliner City of Los Angeles effective with the arrival of the new "Astra-Domes" in 1955. The new equipment featured dome diners, unique to Union Pacific, with their own private "Gold Room" on the lower level for small private parties.
At this time as well, UP's Challenger was consolidated with the City of Los Angeles. The trains retained separate numbers and were marketed separately; coach passengers were assigned to the Challenger section while the City portion became all-Pullman. It is not clear from the timetable whether they were operated as a combined whole or as first and second sections; perhaps both as according to passenger demand.
Also effective in 1955, the Milwaukee Road replaced the Chicago and North Western as UP's partner railroad between Omaha and Chicago. This association would continue until the handover of passenger service to Amtrak in 1971.
