This 1958 edition still shows a strong competitive effort on the part of Missouri Pacific. While MoPac had dropped service to Galveston by early 1955, in this edition of the schedule they had added through service from Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth to and from Chicago courtesy of partner G. M. & O. With their more direct route, MoPac and G. M. & O. were able to offer better times end-to-end than principal competitor Santa Fe, whose route via Kansas City was somewhat faster but significantly longer. One curiosity is the fact that the through sleeper from El Paso and Dallas-Fort Worth was shuffled from Train 2 onto the trailing Train 22 in Little Rock; I presume this was done to minimize the amount of switching which would need to be done during the very short 33 minute layover in St. Louis.

I also show in this timetable the last remnant of the once-proud Sunshine Special, by this point almost entirely subsumed by the Texas Eagle. The southbound Sunshine Special had disappeared from the time card entirely, while the remains of the northbound train now operated from only as far as Texarkana. Apparently, its main reason for continued existence was to provide a vehicle for collecting the northbound through sleepers from miscellaneous points bound for St. Louis without delaying its premium stablemates.

NOTE for connecting Southern Pacific Train No. 40 between Los Angeles and El Paso: "Subject to change in schedule effective after October 26, 1958."

NOTE: There is a ten minute discrepancy between the K. C. S. and Missouri Pacific (shows 5:20 p.m.) timetables for the departure time of the northbound connecting train leaving Shreveport. The Kansas City Southern time is used here. The northbound through sleeper operates in KCS Train No. 16, not L. & A. Train No. 4. The timetable has been corrected accordingly.

NOTE: All times in this timetable are Standard Time. Be advised that Daylight Saving Time is observed in the states of New York and Pennsylvania and the city of Washington, DC from April 27 to October 25 [1958], inclusive, and locally in several communities in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri (including St. Louis). Add one hour to obtain local time in these jurisdictions during this period.

While the equipment listing states clearly that the Houston and San Antonio sections of the Texas Eagle do not handle checked baggage or remains, it appears that checked baggage and express service was still available on Missouri Pacific's secondary train, the Southerner. It departed northbound from San Antonio at 8:15 p.m. and from Houston at 11:45 p.m., arriving St. Louis at 11:00 p.m. the next day. Southbound, it departed St. Louis at a minute before midnight and arrived in Houston at 3:15 a.m. and San Antonio at 5:45 a.m. of the (second) following day. It was common practice in the streamliner era for passengers to take, or to have a taxi or transfer service convey, their baggage to the station a day or so prior to departure. If the luggage did not arrive with or before them, the railroad would have it delivered to their home or hotel when it arrived for a nominal fee.
