Canadian National's Montreal-Halifax line was (and is) all-rail and all-Canadian, but took a roundabout route far to the north. Canadian Pacific's line to the Atlantic was more direct as it cut across Maine, but it terminated in the much less important port of St. John, New Brunswick. Seeking a competitive entrance to Halifax, CPR leased the Dominion Atlantic Railway in 1911 but allowed it to maintain its corporate structure and a fair amount of independence. This gave Canadian Pacific the direct competitive route it desired, albeit broken by a ferry connection between St. John and Digby, Nova Scotia.
At the time of this timetable the Dominion Atlantic's old-fashioned steam-hauled passenger trains had recently (August 1956) been replaced by new, streamlined, air-conditioned Rail Diesel Cars from Budd. It appears, however, that the Atlantic Limited half of the route was being served by a mix of conventional and streamlined equipment.
