The Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway was, almost certainly, the most ambitious infrastructure construction project ever undertaken entirely with private capital. Of course, as a major stockholder in Standard Oil, Henry M. Flagler had access to cash reserves that would have beggared many governments. The Extension would open to traffic on January 22, 1912, with a proud Henry Flagler riding in his private railcar behind the first train to arrive.

Henry Flagler realized the potential danger that hurricanes posed to his creation, and so he endowed the railroad with a generous reserve of cash as a hedge against future disaster. Unfortunately the Key West Extension was never to become profitable, and by the time of the Great Depression the cash reserve was gone. At the time of this timetable, the Florida East Coast was already in receivership. Then, on September 2, 1935, the Florida Keys were pounded by a Category 5 hurricane which killed over 400 and heavily damaged the Overseas Railway, forcing suspension of service. The financially strapped FEC was unable to rebuild and eventually sold the remnants of the railway to the state of Florida to become the foundations of the original Overseas Highway. While most of the bridges were replaced with more modern construction in the 1980s, many still survive as pedestrian paths and fishing piers.
