The Gulf Wind was reduced from daily to tri-weekly operation at about the same time as the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles. The apparent intent was to make a southern transcontinental connection possible. The connection could be made westbound, if the trains were on time, but best not try to make that same connection going east. The Gulf Wind was scheduled to pull out some three hours before the Sunset Limited arrived!
