As passenger train traffic dwindled throughout the 1960s, the railroads found themselves caught between their regulatory mandates to provide service to the communities along their routes and a steadily shrinking roster of trains to do it with. The net result was that some formerly premium trains began to look a lot like "local service" in their later years, with sections splitting off to and small-town stops made at destinations which would have been served by secondary trains during the glory days.

On your first glimpse at this timetable you may find yourself wondering, "Where's the westbound Sportsman and the eastbound F. F. V.?" It's not an omission; the C. & O. had discontinued a pair of secondary trains but chose to keep all three of its premium train names in service. So in this timetable the Sportsman runs eastbound only and the F. F. V. runs only westbound. For the time being, though, the George Washington continued to run in both directions.
