You may wonder what kept the Carolina Special in business in an era as obsessed with the modern and new as the early 1960s. The answer is probably in those footnotes for Pacolet and Jonesvillle: the express business. UPS was not yet a dominant force and Federal Express and its ilk were well off in the future. The carrier of choice in the early 1960s was the Railway Express Agency, and its ubiquitous head-end cars provided an extended lease on life for a number of passenger trains in this period.
