This is the final timetable of the Texas Chief under Santa Fe stewardship, but the train would continue for a time under Amtrak. In the mid-1970s, troubled by their perception that Amtrak had allowed the train's standard of service to deteriorate, Santa Fe would revoke their permission for Amtrak to use their "Chief" trademark.  The train would then be renamed the Lone Star until its final discontinuance with the Carter cutbacks in 1979.
