There is in Texas lore a story, which may well be apocryphal but which has been repeated so many times that it has become legend, of a mayor and city council in the late 19th century sending an urgent telegram requesting a company of Texas Rangers to help put down an incipient riot. When a single Ranger arrived on the next train, the puzzled mayor asked, "Where are the others?" "Others? You've only got one riot, ain't you?" was the immortal response.
The Texas Rangers are the oldest law enforcement agency on the North American continent to hold general statewide jurisdiction. They were organized by Stephen F. Austin in 1823, while Texas was still a Mexican colony, and have been in continuous operation since save for the post-Civil War Reconstruction era when all of Texas was under military governance. While I don't know for certain that this Santa Fe service, which was its premium offering in the Chicago-Texas market up until the debut of the Texas Chief in 1948, was actually named after the Texas Rangers it does seem likely, as the icon of the Ranger had already entered the public consciousness in literature and radio as a symbol of the Lone Star State. ("Who was that masked man?" "Hi-yo Silver, away!)
