The California Special was one of the trains Santa Fe targeted for elimination after the cancellation of Post Office mail contracts in September 1967. First the through cars were eliminated; passengers had to physically transfer to and from the San Francisco Chief in Clovis. Santa Fe then petitioned to drop the train entirely, and service ended in July of 1968.
