By 1954 the San Francisco Overland was nearing the end of its status as a through train connecting Chicago with San Francisco. During the winter and spring months of 1954-55, its through Chicago cars would be combined with a local train between Omaha and Cheyenne while the main stem of the train operated from St. Louis combined with the City of St. Louis. After the changeover of Union Pacific's partner railroad from C. & N. W. to the Milwaukee Road, service on the Overland between Chicago and Omaha would be dropped altogether.
