When the Great Northern upgraded the streamlined Empire Builder with new equipment in 1951 the 1947 equipment was transferred to a new, secondary train: the Western Star. This train served many of the minor stops which the Empire Builder skipped, notably Glacier National Park. By the time of this timetable in the mid-1960s the train's itinerary emphasized the Seattle-St. Paul service, although through equipment did still continue to and from Chicago combined with Burlington trains. By 1971, however, through service to Chicago would end on this train and it would end its days as a Seattle-St. Paul run.
