This train, the first overnight long-distance streamliner, established the pattern for the siblings which would follow it into service on the Union Pacific. It had a fixed articulated (and thus unable to be easily changed) consist and as it had no running mate daily service was impossible; the train would "sail" from each of its terminals five times per month. It retained the inwardly sloping sides of its predecessor the M-10000 which were thought to aid in reducing aerodynamic resistance. However, it seems as though this "feature" was unpopular with passengers; by 1938 the following note appears along with the equipment listing for the City of Portland: "Berths in this train are slightly less than standard width and should not be sold for two adults, without explanation." Aerodynamics were all well and good, but passengers wanted comfort above all. This is just one of the areas in which, as the streamliner revolution progressed, the lessons of tradition would trump the notions of innovation.
