The Union Pacific had launched the streamlined City of Los Angeles in May of 1936. Vowing not to be left in the dust, competitor Santa Fe placed an order with the Budd company for what would become perhaps the finest train ever built. Paneled in rare woods and featuring authentic American Indian artwork, the Super Chief of 1937 was widely acclaimed as a marvel. Except, perhaps, by the Pullman company, which was unhappy dispatching its porters to work on equipment built by its chief competitor.
To defuse the situation, Santa Fe promised to place any subsequent orders for sleeping car equipment with Pullman. But the public response to the new train was overwhelming, and a delighted Santa Fe quickly dispatched an order to Pullman-Standard for a second trainset in order to allow twice-weekly service. The new equipment was delivered and entered service on July 2, 1938.
In the timetable below, the original 1937 Budd equipment leaves Chicago on Tuesdays and Los Angeles on Fridays. The 1938 Pullman-Standard equipment leaves Chicago on Saturdays and Los Angeles on Tuesdays.
