Kansas City Southern continued to enjoy a largely captive market for passenger traffic into the 1960s. The railroad's management promoted its passenger services vigorously, and in fact added new equipment as late as 1965—that order for ten new coaches from Pullman-Standard would in fact be the last new intercity passenger cars built in the U.S. prior to Amtrak.
Unfortunately, the Belle would not be spared from the general decline of rail passenger traffic in the 1960s; the nationwide cancellation of Post Office mail contracts and the discontinuance of many connecting trains which formerly had fed passengers into the Belle's terminals at New Orleans and Kansas City would prove to be blows from which the train would not recover. The Southern Belle would depart New Orleans for the last time on November 2, 1969.
