When the former Gulf, Mobile & Northern merged with the Mobile & Ohio to form the G. M. & O., they extended their Rebel franchise north to East St. Louis, Illinois. Upon the wartime acquisition of the former Alton Route, the terminus was moved across the river to St. Louis and through sleeper service was initiated between Chicago and Mobile, Alabama.
