The Fred Harvey system had been strained to the limit while accommodating the massive crush of passenger traffic during World War II. As late as 1949, it continued to employ nearly 7000 workers. But the precipitous decline in railroad passenger traffic following the war hit the Harvey system hard. The Harvey Houses in Newton, Dodge City, La Junta and Las Vegas soon closed for good. In an attempt to save some of the remaining houses, the Santa Fe reinstituted the train stop for meals in a minor way; in 1950-52 the California Limited began stopping for meals west of Albuquerque.
