The Fred Harvey system had been strained to the limit while accommodating the massive crush of passenger traffic during World War II. As late as 1949, it continued to employ nearly 7000 workers. But the precipitous decline in railroad passenger traffic following the war hit the Harvey system hard. The Harvey Houses in Newton, Dodge City, La Junta and Las Vegas soon closed for good. In an attempt to save some of the remaining houses, the Santa Fe reinstituted the train stop for meals in a minor way; in 1950-52 the California Limited began stopping for meals west of Albuquerque.

The Santa Fe made a token effort, but with the shift of local business from the train stations to the highways the arrival of one train per day was not enough to save the Harvey Houses, and most of them soon closed. The California Limited itself would soon join them; by the time of my next Guide (July 1954) the train had disappeared from the time card in favor of the new San Francisco Chief.
