Chicago & North Western inaugurated its heavyweight "400", so named because it was scheduled to travel 400 miles in just about as many minutes, in 1935 as a pre-emptive strike against Burlington's forthcoming Zephyrs and the Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha. By 1939 it had made the jump to fully streamlined status, featuring new equipment by Pullman-Standard painted in the railroad's trademark green-and-gold.
