The original, pioneering semi-articulated Denver Zephyrs of 1936 would serve the Burlington in that capacity for just shy of twenty years. But with the success of the Vista-Dome first introduced by the Burlington in 1947 on other Zephyrs including the California Zephyr and Twin Zephyrs, Burlington began to look at re-equipping its Chicago-Denver workhorse. There was some resistance due to the fact that the route really wasn't very scenic (you don't hit the mountains until you're west of Denver) and most of the train's run was at night. In addition, with the rise of air travel passenger train patronage had definitely begun its terminal decline. Even so, Burlington management eventually gave Budd the green light to build what would prove to be the last new streamliner to enter service as a complete unit.

I have a traveler's report for this streamliner from Alan Tanenbaum, who writes: "I rode the Denver Zephyr only once; I was in my mid-teens and had never taken a long distance train trip with my parents much less by myself. I rode "coach class". After some 50+ years, my memories of the trip are very hazy but it had to be sometime in the mid-1950's. I have only two recollections. I remember looking at the Vista Dome cars in absolute wonderment; I lived in NYC and had never seen anything like them. I remember staying up all night in a front seat in a Vista Dome car close to the front of the train and watching the Mars Headlight sweep back and forth across the tracks. I remember watching the signals and quickly being able to tell when we were about to meet an oncoming train. Then I remember arriving at Denver Union Station in the morning and seeing the Rocky Mountains almost directly ahead; what an awsome sight."
