The Orange Blossom Special was a train with a mission: Ignore local traffic and intermediate stops; get those vacationing snowbirds from the frozen Northeast to sunny Florida as quickly as possible—in first class style. Operated only during the winter vacation season, it had been Seaboard's premier passenger service since its debut on November 21, 1925. By the time of this timetable its classic heavyweight consist (the train would never be streamlined) had been equipped with air conditioning throughout and the Mountain-type steam locomotives which had once pulled the train between Richmond and Jacksonville had been retired in favor of Diesel power. It is those shiny new Diesel locomotives which were credited with inspiring Ervin Rouse and Chubby Wise to pen the bluegrass fiddling classic, named after the train.

This is the last prewar timetable for the Orange Blossom Special. Five days before the train's first scheduled run of the season the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor would plunge the United States into the middle of World War II. In short order all-Pullman trains marketed to wealthy vacationers would become an unnecessary luxury, and regulations issued in 1942 would end the operation of all seasonal trains. The Orange Blossom Special's service would be suspended for the duration of the war, and the equipment would be reassigned to duties which more directly supported the war effort.
