All seats on the Dixie Flagler must be reserved and assigned in advance.
The Dixie Flagler was the oldest of the Chicago-Florida trio by a year, having been built by Budd for Florida East Coast in 1939 as the Henry M. Flagler, a regional Jacksonville-Miami streamliner. Renamed the Dixieland, it would also be the first of the three to be discontinued, in late 1957. It began operation on its new Chicago-Miami routing on December 17, 1940. Although initially planned as a winter-only venture, public response was so strong that, along with its sister trains, it had been put on a year-round schedule by the following summer.
This train's routing was at the same time the most direct (1455 miles) and yet most complex of the trio—no fewer than six different railroads combined to handle the train between Chicago and Miami. However, to be fair, it must be noted that the Atlanta, Birmingham & Coast was controlled by (and later merged into) Atlantic Coast Line while the N. C. & St. L. was an affiliate of L. & N. To complicate matters even more, A. C. L. owned (but did not exercise) a controlling interest in the L. & N. Streamliner era railroading was perhaps a bit more complex than might appear at first glance.
